Health as an Expendable Resource

Long term lurker and I’m just wondering if anyone’s tried having Health as an expendable resource?

I was inspired by the Expanse TTRPG which uses “Fortune” (Each PC starts with 15 Fortune and you can spend it 1-to-1 to increase any Die Roll) and it really does seem like hearts from ICRPG is a perfect fit for it.

I was thinking something like:

  • Each Charector starts with 3 Hearts - You lose all 3 you die
  • Hearts can be used in the same way as Hero Coins (and may just be a straight up replacement for them)
  • To facilitate a more binary health system you’d need Damage Reduction/Soak
    • If the Effort rolled is higher than Damage Reduction, Lose a Heart
    • If the Effort Rolled is lower than the Damage Reduction, Maybe gain an Injury that increases all damage rolled against you you take until it’s healed? It feels like there should be a penalty for getting hit but not taking damage that adds up over longer fights.

On paper it looks like a solid addition, but I’m always hesitant to make changes to a system I’ve only played a little of and was wondering if anyone with more experience has seen anything like it done?

This feels like calling HEARTS like HIT DICE from other games such as CHAINMAIL or WAR|MAKER by Runehammer.
